Lips are the most sensitive zones of the face. That is why they dry up before the rest when the weather is cold or dry. Chelilits, commonly called “chapped lips” is an effect of extreme dehydration. The skin on lips is very thin and unlike the other areas, it lacks oil secreting glands. It is constantly exposed to extreme weather conditions, makeup products and saliva. This leads to the lips getting itchy, cracked and dry.
Apart from weather conditions, the condition of “chapped lips” can also be caused due to your intake and health conditions. It can also be an allergic reaction to inappropriate cosmetics. Sun damage for a prolonged time can also cause your lips to dry off. It gives rise to an unpleasant look. Although they don’t harm you except for the discomfort, it isn’t incurable for sure. Here is how to treat chapped lips
1. Oil
Oil is a natural moisturizer. Grab natural nut oils and butters- preferably in their raw form. If you do not want a messy look, go for the ones specially processed for lips. Use Coconut oil, shea butter, olive oil, almond oil, rosehip oil or jojoba oil. Shea butter is also a great alternative in absence of essential oils for chapped lips
Add sugar to any of these, and gently rub your lips. Later wash them off with water.
2. Do not Lick lips
Saliva is one of the major causes of dry chapped lips. Never ever lick your lips, although it might provide you a feeling of making them moist. This is because it takes away the moisture in the lips along when it evaporates. It is the simplest remedy for chapped lips.
3. Water
Dehydration is one of the rot causes for chapped lips. Keep yourself hydrated. Drink 5-6 litres of water a day. Your lips are the first to show dehydration. Also eat fruits and vegetables with a high water content. It is the best remedy for chapped lips as it kills the root cause.
4. Lip Balms
Lip balms form a protective layer above the skin. Hence, they preserve the moisture in the severely chapped lips, and also protects them from foreign particles. It gives them the opportunity to heal itself. Choose a gentle lip balm with a shea butter or beeswax base. If unavailable, go for paraffin or petroleum jelly based lip balms.
5. Exfoliation
Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin of your lips, so that the fresh skin gets exposed. There are various scrubs for various types of skin that can be made at home. For example, mix a teaspoon of honey with some sugar and rub it gently over your lips for 15 minutes and then wash it off. It is a great treatment for chapped lips
Although a temporary chapped lips isn’t harmful, if the problem persists it is recommended to visit a doctor. Because it is a symptom of low thyroid levels, low zinc, vitamin B complex, iron levels or inflammatory bowel disease. Following these simple procedures can help you attain the perfect shiny smile.
